What the sound your disposal makes is telling you
Three sounds cover nearly every disposal fault: a hum, silence, or a rattle. Each one has a different first move, and only one of the three usually means the unit has reached the end of its life.

Flip the switch and listen. A hum with no rotation means the motor has power but the plate is jammed, so cut the power, free it with the hex key from underneath, then press the reset button. Silence means no power is reaching the motor, so check the reset button first and the breaker second. A metallic rattle means something hard is loose in the chamber. Water underneath is a separate question entirely, and where the drip starts decides whether it is a gasket, a hose clamp, or a unit that has rusted through and needs replacing.
Cut the power first, and mean it
Switch off at the wall switch, then unplug the unit from the outlet inside the cabinet, or turn off the breaker if it is hard wired. A disposal that has tripped its internal overload can restart the instant it cools, without anyone touching the switch.
Never put a hand into the chamber to feel around, even with the power off. The impellers are blunt but the chamber wall collects fragments of glass, bone and metal that are not blunt at all. Use tongs, pliers or a torch and a mirror.
Silence when you flip the switch
Look under the unit for a small red or black button in the centre of the base. That is the overload reset, and it pops out when the motor has drawn too much current. Press it firmly until it clicks and stays in. If it will not stay in, the motor is still under load, which usually means it is jammed as well, and the reset will keep popping until the jam is cleared.
If the reset is already seated and nothing happens, work outwards. Test the outlet under the sink with something else, since many are switched and some are on the same circuit as the dishwasher. Then check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker or an outlet with its own test button. Only after that is it reasonable to conclude the motor is finished.
A hum with no rotation
This is the jam, and it is the most common disposal fault by a distance. With the power off, find the hex key that came with the unit, taped to the side or in a drawer somewhere, and fit it into the socket in the centre of the underside. Work it back and forth, both directions, until the plate turns a full revolution freely.
If the socket is stripped or the key is long gone, a wooden spoon handle pushed against an impeller from above will lever it round. Once it turns freely, take a torch and look in the chamber for whatever caused it. A bottle cap, a peach stone and a stray teaspoon are the usual suspects. Fish it out, restore power, press the reset, run cold water, and switch on.
Water where it should not be
Dry the whole assembly, put a sheet of paper towel under it, and run water for a minute. The wet patch tells you which of four joints is at fault.
That last one is the honest end of the road for a disposal. Everything above it is a repair. The body seam is a replacement, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a gasket you will be back to argue about.

Why the drain matters more than the disposal in older houses
Costa Mesa housing has a median build year of 1972, which puts most of it in the era of copper supply and cast iron waste lines. Cast iron that has been in service that long is rarely smooth inside. It carries a rough internal lining of corrosion and accumulated grease, and the effective bore is narrower than the pipe it started as.
Feed that pipe a steady diet of ground food slurry and the lining thickens where the flow slows. This is why a kitchen line under an older Costa Mesa house backs up again three weeks after it was snaked: cabling cuts a channel through the obstruction and restores flow, but the lining that caused it is still on the wall. Hydro jetting scours that wall back to bare material, which is a different outcome from the same visit. If your kitchen drain has needed clearing more than once in a year, the disposal is not the fault, and a camera in the line is worth more than a new unit.
Repair or replace
Replace when the body leaks at the seam, when the motor hums and resets repeatedly after the jam has been properly cleared, when the bearings growl and the unit shakes the cabinet, or when the grinding chamber has visibly rusted out around the impellers. Those are all end-of-life symptoms and no part addresses them.
Repair when the fault is the splash guard, the sink flange seal, the discharge gasket, the dishwasher hose clamp, or a jam. All of those are hours of work and inexpensive parts on a unit that otherwise runs fine, and swapping the whole disposal to solve one of them is the bigger job for no gain.
The knockout plug nobody remembers
When a disposal is new, the dishwasher inlet is sealed by a moulded plug inside the unit. It has to be knocked out with a screwdriver and the fragment removed from the chamber before the dishwasher hose is connected. Miss it and the dishwasher will not drain, which presents as a dishwasher fault and gets diagnosed as one. If your dishwasher stopped draining right after a new disposal went in, that plug is the first thing to check.
Keeping it running
Run cold water for a good twenty seconds after the grinding noise stops, so the waste is carried well past the trap rather than parked in it. Cold, not hot, because cold keeps fat solid enough to be carried out instead of coating the pipe. Once a month, grind a tray of ice cubes to knock deposits off the chamber wall, and follow it with a citrus peel if the unit smells. None of that repairs anything, but it is the difference between a disposal that jams twice a year and one that does not.
