Why a tub drains slowly, and what actually clears it
A tub that takes twenty minutes to empty is nearly always blocked in its first few inches, and the fix is a torch and a hooked strip of plastic. When it is not, the way in is the overflow plate rather than the drain itself.

Most slow tubs are blocked within the first six inches of the drain, in the mat of hair and soap wrapped around the stopper stem or the crossbars of the strainer. Take the stopper out, look in with a torch, and pull what you find upwards with a hooked plastic strip rather than pushing it further down. If the tub still crawls with the stopper out and the visible mat gone, the blockage is deeper, and the useful access is the overflow plate at the head of the tub, not the drain grate at the bottom.
Get the stopper out first
Stoppers that come out by hand
A lift-and-turn stopper has a small grub screw under the knob; back it off and the whole body lifts out. A push-pull type unscrews from the shaft once you hold the shaft still. A toe-touch stopper comes apart by unscrewing the top cap anticlockwise, and the shaft below it usually needs a screwdriver held across it to stop it spinning. All three collect hair on the underside of the stem, and all three will look clean from above while carrying a fist-sized mat underneath.
Trip lever tubs
Older tubs have no stopper in the drain at all. Instead there is a lever on the overflow plate connected to a brass plunger hanging inside the overflow pipe. Two screws release the plate, and the whole linkage lifts out through the overflow as one piece. Very often the linkage itself is the fault: the plunger has corroded, or the adjustment nut has worked its way along the rod so the plunger sits halfway across the tub tee even with the lever up. Clean it, adjust the rod so the plunger rises fully, and the tub drains at a normal rate again with no blockage having existed.
The overflow is the access, not the grate
With the linkage removed, the overflow becomes an open pipe leading straight down into the tub tee and the trap. A small hand auger fed down there follows the pipe naturally and reaches the trap in a couple of feet. Going in through the drain grate means fighting the crossbars first, and the cable tends to coil in the tub shoe rather than turn the corner. If the grate is a screwed-in strainer and you do want it out, a strainer wrench or a pair of pliers braced across the crossbars will back it off, but the overflow route saves the argument.
Feed the cable with steady rotation and do not force it if it stops solid at a fixed distance. On a pre-1960 bathroom the tub arm can be galvanised steel with a bore reduced by scale, and pushing hard into a corroded section finds the weakness rather than the blockage.
Why the kettle and baking soda trick only half works
The fizz happens at the top of the blockage, which is the part that was going to shift anyway. A hair and soap mat is porous; water runs through it while it sits there, so a pour of anything hot appears to work for a day or two before the drain slows again. Boiling water is also worth avoiding on plastic waste fittings, where repeated heat cycles loosen joints that were only ever hand-tight plus a quarter turn. Treat it as maintenance on an already clean drain, not as a repair to a blocked one.
Old bathrooms hide a drum trap
Some bathrooms built before 1960 have a drum trap: a cylindrical trap set into the floor near the tub with a screw-down lid, usually chrome or brass, sitting flush with the tiles. It was designed to be opened and cleaned out, and it catches everything, which is why it blocks and why a cable will not pass through it in the way it passes a P-trap. Orange County has limited stock that old, but it exists. Rossmoor’s median build year is 1958 and Seal Beach’s is 1966, and there are older pockets in Santa Ana and in parts of Costa Mesa either side of the 1972 median. If your tub has never drained well and there is a round lid in the bathroom floor, unscrew it before doing anything else.
Gurgling means air, not hair
A tub that drains at a reasonable speed but glugs loudly as the last of the water goes, or gives off a drain smell afterwards, is describing a venting problem rather than a blockage. Waste pipes need air behind the water; if the vent is restricted, the draining water pulls air through the nearest trap instead and siphons it partly empty, which is where the smell comes from. Causes range from debris or a nest in the vent terminal on the roof to a partial blockage in a vent shared with the basin next to the tub. Snaking the tub in that situation changes nothing, because there was nothing in the tub line to remove.
When the tub is a symptom, not the problem
The tub is usually the lowest fixture in the house, which makes it the first place a main line blockage shows itself. If water rises in the tub when a toilet is flushed, or the tub fills slightly when the washing machine drains, stop running water and stop working on the tub. Nothing you do at that drain will help, and every extra gallon has to go somewhere. That is a main line question, and what the camera finds decides it.
The lasting fix when hair is not the answer
A tub that slows again within weeks, with a clean stopper and a clear overflow, has something structural behind it. A camera goes in through the overflow or through a cleanout to find out what. A galvanised tub arm scaled down to a narrow channel does not respond to cleaning in any lasting way, and the honest recommendation is replacing that section of arm and trap rather than selling repeat visits. How big that job is depends entirely on access. A raised floor with a crawl space makes it straightforward. A room below the bathroom means opening a ceiling. Slab-on-grade construction, which is the norm across most of the county, means cutting concrete, and that is a real job that deserves to be described as one before anyone starts. Where the smaller answer is the right one, that is what gets recommended.

Those five observations take ten minutes and they separate a hair mat from a vent fault from a main line problem, which is the split that decides whether this is a job for a torch and a hooked strip of plastic or a job for a camera.
